Pulp Fiction (1994) Starring: Uma Thurman, John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson by Richard Leigh
Having long been a fan of Director Quentin Tarantino, it should come as no surprise that 'Pulp Fiction' is one of my favourite films of all time. 'Pulp Fiction' was the 1994 follow up to 'Reservoir Dogs', a film I first saw at a young age and fell in love with instantaneously. Much like the way in which the films of Tim Burton tend to have a magical feel about them, Tarantino has a similarly distinctive directorial style, one of which I myself am hugely fond of.
'Pulp Fiction' brought John Travolta success in the 90's and was just a general all round cracker of a film. I get excited about the films of few directors, however every time a new Tarantino film is released I am amongst the first to get down to the cinema and view it. 'Pulp Fiction' is a film which I can view time and time again without ever tiring of, one that I can never get enough of and always enjoy watching. If it weren't a Tarantino film then I feel that it wouldn't work in quite such a way as it does as really there is relatively little narrative structure to the film and yet there always seems to be so much going on and the film is never anything but enthralling to watch.
In the way of narrative, I feel that there is little that can be said about the film without giving too much away of the plot. What I will say however is that the film is split into three sections; 'The Bonnie Situation', 'The Gold Watch', and 'Vincent Vega and Marsellus Wallace's Wife'. Essentially these are all separate stories that link together in order to make the 'Pulp Fiction' film as a whole. The film is not shown in chronological order, but instead it flicks backwards and forwards in time to wherever these three sections may take you. You never quite know where you are with the film and I personally actually found myself to be quite disorientated with it all when watching. The good thing about this is that it keeps you on your toes when watching and you therefore have to pay close attention and never miss a moment. If you miss even the slightest moment of the film then on your return you could find yourself quite confused and bewildered with all that is going on. Watch out for this.
All those cast in the film perform extremely well in their parts. Uma Thurman is fantastic in her role as the wife of 'Marsellus' played by Ving Rhames, and John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson are awesome as his henchmen. None of the main characters in the film disappoint in their parts and neither do those that play a more minor role in the films progression. All those involved help to make the film the excellent Tarantino hit that it is. Not only is the acting of an extremely high standard, but the script and direction also. All elements of the film seem to come together perfectly and therefore the film provides for great entertainment when watching. A perfect film to sit down and watch on an evening.
When watching the films of Tarantino the one thing you should always watch out for are his cameo appearances. It's just something he likes to do and therefore you should always keep a close eye out for his appearance. In 'Pulp Fiction' you don't have to look too carefully as he stands out like a sore thumb, living a 'normal' lifestyle with his wife within the film. It is an amusing appearance that he makes and is without doubt one of my favourite scenes from the film. I had not been expecting such a high profile appearance the first time I saw the film and seeing him in the role he does, it provided me with a huge smile on my face and was greatly pleasing to see.
'Pulp Fiction' is an excellent film and is one that I would recommend to all. The work of Quentin Tarantino never fails to impress me and 'Pulp Fiction' is no exception to this rule. When watching this film I pay extremely close attention to it all and never do I miss a second, I love every moment of the film and cannot find a single fault with it. As the follow up film to 'Resevoir Dogs' from Tarantino I can have no complaints as he here proves himself to be an extremely proficient and hugely talented film director. If you've not taken the opportunity to view this film already then make sure that you do; you'll surely not be disappointed with what you see and I wouldn't be surprised if you love the film just as much as I. There is literally no faulting Tarantino for his 'Pulp Fiction' film, a film that he has since followed with 'Jackie Brown', the 'Kill Bill' double, and 'Deathproof' also. Never has he disappointed and always he impresses, an excellent Director and forever may he remain as one of my favourites.
